Convent & Stuart Hall sophomores arrived in Costa Rica on January 13 for a week-long service and cultural immersion trip. The sixth annual coed experience, inaugurated by President Ann Marie Krejcarek in 2014, calls on students to stretch beyond their comfort zone while engaging in service projects and adventure activities.
With electronics — including cell phones — left in the Bay Area for an unplugged experience, 117 students and 14 chaperones are spending the week in a small town about three hours from Costa Rica's capital, San Jose.
The experiential trip has fun activities — ziplining through the trees, horseback riding to waterfalls, whitewater rafting, and surfing — but students will also get their hands dirty, working at local schools on maintenance projects, delivering supplies to children and digging sand pits to promote conservation of sea turtles and their habitat.
Divided into small groups, students rotate through various daily activities, the most memorable of which is often meeting and working alongside local children. With bags packed full of essential supplies such as notebooks, pencils and paint for students at three elementary schools, the Class of 2021 embarked on what promises to be an unforgettable journey. Pura vida!
