A Call to Act in Hope

Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ
Across the world on Easter, we heard Andrea Bocelli give witness to his conviction as a believer in the Risen Christ first in his heart felt statement and then in the music he shared with the city, the country and the world which he loves. His prayer-concert began with these words: "On the day...
...in which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I am honored and happy to answer 'Si' to the invitation of the City and the Duomo of Milan. I believe in the strength of praying together. I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that everyone - whether they are believers or not - truly needs right now. Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth's pulsating heart... The generous, courageous, proactive Milan and the whole of Italy will be again, and very soon, a winning model, an engine of the renaissance that we all hope for. It will be a joy to witness it in the Duomo during the Easter celebration which evokes the mystery of birth and rebirth." Andrea Bocelli Easter Sunday 2020

Inspired by seeing Easter as the celebration of trust in a life that triumphs, Bocelli offers us a magnificent image as he speaks of praying together as "bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world so that we might hug this wounded Earth's pulsating heart."

I am wondering how to make the best use of this Easter season to consider Bocelli's invitation to touch the woundedness of our planet. This time of simultaneous physical isolation AND social connectedness challenges my thinking about what it means to believe in the Risen Christ. Through his concert, Bocelli models one person's acting and speaking from this fundamental belief. What about us? Covid-19 creates a new urgency for each of us to align our hearts and minds with our actions. What does it mean to consider Easter as the time we celebrate our "trust in a life that triumphs?" How am I, how are we modeling our belief? How does our hope in the Resurrection inspires us to act in hope?
