Exchange Programs

Domestic and International Exchange

Schools within the Network of Sacred Heart offer programs of both domestic and international exchange to its students. The Sacred Heart exchange program has existed for over 40 years and has engaged more than 2,500 students from 25 Sacred Heart Schools in Canada and the United States along with a multitude of international students.
Upper school students may apply to attend another school in the Network or within the international Sacred Heart community for a time period of a few weeks to one academic quarter or the entire year depending on the parameters set by their individual schools. Some exchange opportunities also are available for middle school students and a variety of exchange and service trips capture a multitude of grade levels, depending on the school.

In order to qualify for exchange, students must be in good academic and social standing at their home school and obtain the recommendations of their teachers and head of school. The exchange coordinators at the students’ home school and intended exchange school process the paperwork. After students are accepted, schedules compatible with what they have been and will be taking for the rest of the year are worked out. Exchange students live either in the boarding school or with a host family.

The many advantages to exchange include seeing another part of the country or world, getting a taste of life away from home before college, experiencing life – academic, extracurricular, religious, and social – at another school, making new friends and building community within the Network.

Some Network schools also offer the opportunity for faculty to participate in exchange programs. Similar to students, faculty exchanges may last from a few weeks, to an academic term, to a full school year.
These exchanges provide faculty the opportunity to see the life lived in another Sacred Heart school and to witness Sacred Heart spirituality and pedagogy in a context and environment different than their own.
Schools of the Sacred Heart share in the educational mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart as articulated in the Goals and Criteria. The structure supporting Sacred Heart education in Canada and the United States includes the Conference of Sacred Heart Education and the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.  Together they provide services and programs to ensure vitality of mission for the member schools sponsored by the Society of the Sacred Heart.
