Stone Ridge is seeking a Head of Middle School to begin work on July 1, 2019.
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. With over 700 students, and rooted in the Goals of Sacred Heart education, Stone Ridge inspires young women to lead and serve, through lives of purpose that integrate faith, intellect, community, social action, and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. The Middle School includes grades 5-8, with a student body of 231 girls and a faculty and staff of approximately 38.

Reporting to the Head of School, the Head of Middle School is responsible for the overall spiritual and academic leadership of the Middle School. S/he maintains congruence among the School's mission and all activities and operations of the Middle School, serving as a member of the Administrative, Management, and Academic Leadership Teams. S/he acts as the educational leader of the Middle School, responsible for its day-to-day operation, and functions as the chief articulator of programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed.
In conjunction with the Assistant Head of Middle School and the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, the Head of Middle School observes and evaluates the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum. Working in conjunction with the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, the Head of Middle School makes recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty. Aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of the school community, the Head of Middle School develops plans for meeting these needs in conjunction with learning support teams. Likewise, the Head of Middle School oversees and guides the activities of the department chairs, the sponsors of various student organizations and activities, and faculty committees. The Head of Middle School facilitates co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school, assists in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs, and assists in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events. With the Assistant Head of Middle School, the Head of Middle School is responsible for establishing guidelines for proper student conduct and dress; maintaining student discipline consonant with school policies, monitoring students' adherence to established school rules, and maintaining accurate records of student attendance and citizenship. S/he works closely with the Director of Enrollment Management and the Admissions Team to attract, admit, and obtain mission appropriate students. S/he maintains regular communication with parents about the life of the school. This includes regular coordination with the Director of Marketing and Communications for key external communications.
The ideal candidate understands and respects the teachings and values of the Catholic Church, has significant experience as a teacher and/or school administrator, and holds an advanced degree in education or school leadership. S/he has a demonstrable knowledge of pedagogy, faculty coaching, and/or instruction, especially Understanding by Design as the School’s chosen pedagogical model. S/he is an excellent communicator and possesses strong skills of organization, follow through, and interpersonal relations.
