Who We Are

Who We Are

The Society of the Sacred Heart is an international community of women in the Catholic Church, founded in 1800 by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. Sharing her vision and mission, Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) are convinced of the centrality of prayer and contemplation in their lives. They are committed to discovering and making God's love visible in the heart of the world through the service of education. Conscious that what we do, we do together, and remembering a tradition marked by a love for young people and missionary spirit, we carry out this service of education:
    • Especially in the work of teaching and formation;
    • In other activities for human development and the promotion of justice;
    • In pastoral work and guidance in the faith.
1982 Constitutions of the Society of the Sacred Heart, #13

The Constitutions of the Society of the Sacred Heart, 1982:

captures the principles of the life of Religious of the Sacred Heart. Just as any constitutions, this document deals with the nature, mission and structure of the Society of the Sacred Heart. It conveys both the charism of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat and spirit of the Society which she founded. Anyone wishing to understand the essence of the Society will benefit from reading the Constitutions.

General Chapter Priorities: 2016

A chapter is an important governing structure for religious congregations because it establishes future orientations for mission. During a chapter, participants discern how best to read the needs of the world in light of charism. A chapter typically concludes by summarizing these orientations in aspirational statements identified as calls. The 2016 General Chapter of Society of the Sacred Heart shared four calls:
To reach new frontiers
To live more humanly
To create silence
To be and to act as one Body
Schools of the Sacred Heart share in the educational mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart as articulated in the Goals and Criteria. The structure supporting Sacred Heart education in Canada and the United States includes the Conference of Sacred Heart Education and the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.  Together they provide services and programs to ensure vitality of mission for the member schools sponsored by the Society of the Sacred Heart.
