Socially Aware & Empathetic Thinking

The purpose of this program is to introduce a framework of becoming "socially aware and empathetic thinkers."

This is a process during which one must commit to growing in self-knowledge by engaging in an ongoing self-examination of one's own life experiences, influences, values, and beliefs.

This program will explore how to use self-examination as a tool for their own social and emotional development.

During these challenging and polarizing times, it is imperative to help students engage in meaningful and deliberate conversations on difficult topics. In order to help students develop this skill, we need to help them learn about themselves, their influences, experiences, and their lens on the world. The purpose of this program is to introduce Middle School and Upper School Counselors to the framework of becoming “socially aware and empathic thinkers.”

This is the process of becoming a socially informed citizen, who is able to think outside themself and recognize the inherent dignity of all people. During this process, one must commit to growing in self-knowledge by engaging in an ongoing self-examination of one’s own life experiences, influences, values, and belief. One must continue challenging themselves to deepen one’s own critical consciousness by seeking a more complex understanding of different life realities, experiences, and injustices.

With this framework at the center, this program will explain the different processes and skills that are associated with guiding students through this ongoing process. Additionally, this program will explore how to use this process to help students use self-examination as a tool for their own social and emotional development. Participants will receive different tools and resources.
