Pope’s Holy Week message: ‘Creativity of love can overcome isolation’

Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ
A few nights ago, Pope Francis sent a video messge as Christians around the world prepare to celebrate Holy Week. Acknowledging that our celebration of Holy Week this year occurs in the midst of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
I urge all to watch the Pope as he speaks to us. Look at his eyes and his facial expression as he encourages us to find and experience hope in the reality of Easter.

My impression of Francis is that he is one who experiences his spirituality and relationships with Mystery as the Risen Christ. Just as did St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, Pope Francis recognizes thee Risen Christ... "as the all-embracing Christ, a loving incarnation of the Divine, extended without limit, totally inclusive, conditioning welcoming." (Sacred Heart Educators: An Orientation to Mission p.12) Francis tells us... "And in the silence of our cities, the Easter Gospel will resound. In the Risen Jesus, life conquered death." In this truth we find hope.

"Hope," explains Francis, "is nourished by our Paschal faith." This hope does not disappoint. Hope encourages us, even in our isolation. Francis reminds us that... "thought and spirit can go far with the creativity of love." This is what we need at Easter.

Inspired by this hope, let us celebrate Easter by anchoring our search for truth and meaning in our relationship with Christ in and through whom we expeirence the tenderness and warmth of Christ. This confidence in the Risen Christ will support us as we prepare for the life that will exist post Covid-19.
